New photos Leo Smit
In February 2020 some new photos were found of Leo Smit that had never before been published. The photos were part of a family album belonging to a friend of Leo’s sister Nora. The pictures were taken in the summer of 1923, when Leo Smit was still a student at the Amsterdam Conservatoire.
A year before, he had successfully completed his piano studies. His orchestral composition Silhouetten had also premiered in 1922 in the Great Hall of the Concertgebouw. In the summer of 1923, his latest composition Voorspel voor De vertraagde film was performed in the same hall by the Orchestra of the Conservatoire under the baton of Isaac (‘Piet’) Mossel. Leo completed his composition studies with Sem Dresden on 1 July 1924, being the first student in the history of the conservatoire who graduated with honours.
